How do I calculate a weighted average grade?
Multiply each assignment's score by its weight, sum those products, then divide by the total weight: scoring 90% on homework (20%), 85% on midterm (30%), and 78% on the final (50%) gives (90×0.2 + 85×0.3 + 78×0.5) = 82.5%.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
The formula still works correctly as long as you divide by the sum of the weights you entered — the calculator normalizes automatically, so weights of 20, 30, and 40 (summing to 90) still compute a valid weighted average.
Why not just average the raw scores?
A simple average treats every assignment equally, which misrepresents a course where the final exam counts far more than a quiz. Weighted averages reflect how much each component actually contributes to your final grade.
