How do I dilute a stock solution to a target concentration?
Use M₁V₁ = M₂V₂: to make 500 mL of 0.5 M from a 2.0 M stock, V₁ = (0.5 × 500) ÷ 2.0 = 125 mL of stock, topped up with 375 mL of diluent to reach 500 mL total.
What is a dilution factor?
How many times the concentration is reduced: diluting 2.0 M to 0.5 M is a 4× dilution factor (2.0 ÷ 0.5 = 4). A 1:10 dilution means 1 part stock to 9 parts diluent, a 10× dilution factor.
Does the formula work for any concentration unit?
Yes — M₁V₁ = M₂V₂ works for molarity, percentage, mg/mL, or any consistent concentration unit, as long as both sides use the same unit.
