BMI vs Body Fat Percentage

BMI

Weight relative to height. Takes 10 seconds, needs no equipment, and is what doctors and studies use for screening.

Body fat %

What fraction of your weight is fat. Slower to measure but describes your actual composition.

BMIBody fat %
What it needsHeight and weightSeveral body measurements (or calipers / a scan)
Muscle vs fatCannot tell them apart — muscular people read "overweight"Distinguishes them directly
Best usePopulation screening, quick check-insTracking a cut or bulk, athletic goals
WeaknessMisleads for athletes, the elderly, and very tall/short peopleEstimation formulas carry a few percent of error
Healthy range18.5 – 24.9Roughly 10–20% (men), 18–28% (women)

The bottom line

Use BMI as the quick smoke alarm and body fat percentage as the real gauge. If the two disagree — a high BMI with a lean body fat reading — trust the body fat number. Waist-to-height ratio is a good third opinion.
