How it works

BMI is calculated as:

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)2

For imperial units: BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)2. The standard adult categories are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal weight, 25 to 29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obese.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI range?
For most adults a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the normal, healthy range.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a general screening tool and does not measure body fat directly. It can be misleading for very muscular people, athletes, the elderly and children, so treat it as a guide only.
Can I use pounds and inches?
Yes. Switch the unit toggle to imperial to enter your weight in pounds and your height in feet and inches.
