How it works
Add: total = price × (1 + rate); remove: price = total ÷ (1 + rate)Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between GST and HST?
GST (5%) is the federal tax alone, charged in provinces that haven't harmonized. HST combines GST with a provincial portion into one rate — 13% in Ontario, 15% in the Atlantic provinces. Some provinces (BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec) charge GST plus a separate provincial sales tax instead.
How do I remove HST from a total?
Divide by 1 plus the rate: a $113 total at 13% HST is $113 ÷ 1.13 = $100 before tax, with $13 HST. Subtracting 13% of the total gives the wrong (too-small) pre-tax price.
Which provinces use HST vs GST+PST?
HST provinces: Ontario (13%), New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, PEI (15%). GST+PST/QST: BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec. Alberta, Yukon, NWT and Nunavut charge GST only (5%).
