Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate VAT?
To add 20% VAT to £100, multiply by 1.20 = £120. To find the VAT inside a £120 gross price, divide by 1.20 to get £100 net — the VAT is £20, not £24. Reverse VAT is the step people get wrong.
What are the VAT rates in the UK and EU?
UK standard rate is 20% (5% reduced, 0% zero-rated items). EU standard rates range from 17% (Luxembourg) to 27% (Hungary); Germany 19%, France 20%, Ireland 23%. Rates change — check the tax authority for current figures.
What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?
VAT is charged at every production stage and included in displayed prices; US sales tax is charged only at final sale and added at the register. For consumers the reverse-calculation math is identical.
