Frequently Asked Questions

How is zakat calculated?
Add your zakatable assets — cash, bank balances, gold and silver, trade investments, money owed to you — subtract immediately due debts, and if the net exceeds the nisab and has been held a full lunar year, pay 2.5% of the total (not just the amount above nisab).
What is nisab and how much is it?
Nisab is the minimum wealth that makes zakat obligatory: the value of 87.48 g of gold or 612.36 g of silver. Most scholars advise the silver standard (the lower figure) so more people qualify to give — enter today's value in the nisab field.
Do I pay zakat on my house, car or salary?
Not on personal-use assets like your home, car and furnishings. Salary itself isn't zakatable — but whatever remains saved when your zakat year completes is. Property bought to resell counts as trade goods.
