How it works

Take-home = gross - Income Tax - National Insurance - pension. Income Tax applies 20% / 40% / 45% to income above the £12,570 personal allowance (tapered by £1 for every £2 earned over £100,000). Employee NI is 8% on earnings from £12,570 to £50,270 and 2% above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tax year and region?
The 2026/27 tax year for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The personal allowance, tax bands and NI rates were confirmed unchanged from 2025/26 by the House of Commons Library.
Does it cover Scotland?
Not yet. Scotland uses its own six income tax bands (19% to 48%), so Scottish taxpayers should use a Scotland-specific tool. National Insurance is the same across the UK.
What is the £100,000 trap?
Above £100,000, your personal allowance drops by £1 for every £2 you earn, disappearing at £125,140. This calculator applies that taper automatically, so high earners see the higher effective rate.
Does it include student loans?
Not in this version. It covers Income Tax, National Insurance and optional pension salary sacrifice. Student loan repayments can be added as an update.
