How do I calculate my average share price?
Divide total money invested by total shares: 10 shares at $50 plus 20 at $35 is $1,200 for 30 shares — a $40 average, not the $42.50 midpoint of the prices.
Is averaging down a good idea?
It lowers your breakeven but concentrates more money in the same stock. It works when your original thesis still holds; it compounds losses when the business has genuinely deteriorated.
Does this include fees?
Add commissions into each purchase amount for a true cost basis — most brokers are commission-free now, but spreads and fees on some platforms still matter.
