How it works
m = (y₂ − y₁) ÷ (x₂ − x₁); b = y₁ − m·x₁Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the slope between two points?
Divide the change in y by the change in x: between (1, 2) and (5, 10), m = (10−2)/(5−1) = 2. A positive slope rises left-to-right; negative falls.
What does an undefined slope mean?
The two points share the same x value, so the line is vertical and the rise-over-run division would divide by zero. Its equation is x = constant.
How is slope related to angle?
The angle of incline is arctan(m): a slope of 1 is 45°, a slope of 2 is about 63.4°. Road grades quote slope as a percentage (m × 100).
