How it works
New regime slabs applied marginally after the standard deduction; rebate under 87A if income ≤ thresholdFrequently Asked Questions
How does the new tax regime work?
The new regime applies slab rates (0% up to ₹3L, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30%) with a standard deduction of ₹75,000 for salary but almost no other exemptions. A ₹12L salary income pays roughly ₹71,500 plus cess.
What is the Section 87A rebate?
It makes income up to a threshold effectively tax-free by rebating the computed tax. Under the new regime this threshold has been generous in recent budgets — this calculator applies a common ₹7L-taxable rebate; verify the current year's limit.
Old regime or new regime — which is better?
The new regime wins if you claim few deductions; the old regime can win if you have large 80C, home-loan-interest, HRA and insurance deductions. Compute both before choosing. Add 4% health & education cess to the tax shown here.
