How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?
Battery size × electricity rate ÷ charging efficiency: a 75 kWh battery at $0.15/kWh with 90% efficiency costs about $12.50 for a full charge — often 100–300 miles of range.
Is charging cheaper than gas?
At home, almost always: 3.5 mi/kWh at $0.15/kWh is ~4.3¢/mile versus ~14¢/mile for a 30 mpg car at $4.20/gas — roughly $115/month saved at 1,200 miles. DC fast charging at $0.40+/kWh narrows the gap sharply.
Why include charging efficiency?
About 8–12% of energy is lost as heat between the wall and the battery, so you pay for slightly more electricity than the battery stores. The calculator accounts for it.
