How do dog years really convert to human years?
A 2020 UC San Diego study of DNA methylation found dogs age very fast early, then slow down: human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog years) + 31. A 1-year-old dog is like a 31-year-old human; a 4-year-old is about 53.
Is the 7-year rule wrong?
As an average across a lifetime it is roughly right for medium dogs, but it badly understates early aging (a 2-year-old dog is not 14 in human terms — closer to 42) and overstates later years.
Do small dogs age slower than large dogs?
They live longer: small breeds often reach 14–16 years while giant breeds average 8–10. The formula here comes from Labrador data, so treat it as a mid-size estimate.
