How it works
A = P(1 + r/m)^(m·t) where m is compounds per year and t is yearsFrequently Asked Questions
How is CD interest calculated?
CDs compound at a fixed rate for a fixed term — daily, monthly or quarterly depending on the bank. A $10,000 CD at 4.5% APY for 18 months matures at about $10,690.
What is the difference between rate and APY?
The nominal rate is before compounding; APY includes it. Banks advertise APY because compounding makes it slightly higher — compare CDs by APY.
What happens if I withdraw a CD early?
Banks charge an early-withdrawal penalty, typically 3–12 months of interest. If you might need the money, a no-penalty CD or high-yield savings account is safer.
