How it works
Levy = taxable income × 2%, phased in above the low-income threshold, nil below itFrequently Asked Questions
How much is the Medicare Levy?
Generally 2% of taxable income for most taxpayers. Below a low-income threshold no levy applies, and there's a phase-in range just above it where the levy applies at a reduced, gradually increasing rate rather than the full 2% all at once.
What is the Medicare Levy Surcharge?
An additional 1–1.5% charged on higher-income earners (above a separate, higher threshold) who don't hold private hospital cover — it's a surcharge on top of, not instead of, the standard 2% levy, and is not included in this basic calculator.
Who is exempt from the Medicare Levy?
Some visa holders not eligible for Medicare, and taxpayers below the low-income threshold, may be exempt or reduced. Check your eligibility with the ATO — exemptions are not modelled here.
